Hideaway's 1957 founding and chain growth
Hideaway Pizza was founded in 1957 in Stillwater, Oklahoma — the home of Oklahoma State University. The original location was a small operation serving college students and local Stillwater residents, building a reputation through the 1960s and 1970s as a substantial alternative to the various national-chain pizza operations that were expanding across American casual dining during the same era. The Oklahoma roots have remained central to the chain's identity across its growth.
Through the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, Hideaway expanded gradually across Oklahoma and into neighboring states. The expansion has been controlled and family-oriented rather than the aggressive corporate-franchise expansion that produced the major national pizza chains; current operations remain approximately 15-20 locations rather than the hundreds or thousands that define the major chains. This controlled growth has allowed consistent quality across all locations.
The chain's family-ownership structure has been one of its defining features. Unlike the various national pizza chains that operate under corporate franchise models with distant ownership, Hideaway has maintained family ownership across the decades with active operational involvement. The Edmond location and various other current locations operate under the same family-ownership umbrella that has defined Hideaway since founding.
